Eczema and the Skin Barrier Connection

If you've ever lived with eczema, you'll know it's so much more than just dry skin.

It's the itch that wakes you up at night. The patches that flare without warning. The constant cycle of trying new products, hoping this one will be different, and then watching your skin react all over again. The self-consciousness that comes with skin that feels unpredictable and out of control.

Eczema is exhausting in a way that's hard to explain to someone who hasn't experienced it. And for a long time, the conversation around it focused almost entirely on managing symptoms rather than understanding what's actually driving them.

But the research into eczema has shifted significantly in recent years. And what's become increasingly clear is that eczema is, at its core, a skin barrier condition.

Understanding that changes everything about how you approach it.


What is eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic inflammatory skin condition characterised by dry, itchy, inflamed skin that can flare and remit over time. It affects people of all ages, though it's particularly common in children, and it often appears alongside other atopic conditions like asthma and hay fever.

It can show up anywhere on the body but tends to appear in the creases of the elbows and knees, on the hands, face, and neck. In some people it's mild and occasional. In others it's severe and constant.

What it always has in common is a compromised skin barrier.


The skin barrier connection

In people with eczema, the skin barrier doesn't function the way it should. Research has identified that many people with eczema have a mutation or deficiency in a protein called filaggrin, which plays a critical role in maintaining the skin barrier's structure and integrity.

Without enough filaggrin, the barrier develops gaps. Moisture escapes more readily, which is why eczema skin is almost always dry. And because the barrier is compromised, irritants, allergens, and bacteria can penetrate the skin more easily, triggering the immune response that causes inflammation, redness, and itching.

It becomes a cycle. A weakened barrier leads to inflammation. Inflammation further damages the barrier. And a more damaged barrier makes the skin even more vulnerable to triggers.

Breaking that cycle requires addressing the barrier, not just the symptoms.


What triggers eczema flares?

Triggers vary significantly from person to person, which is one of the reasons eczema can feel so unpredictable. But some of the most common ones include synthetic fragrances and preservatives in skincare and cleaning products, harsh soaps and cleansers that strip the skin's natural oils, certain fabrics particularly wool and synthetic materials against the skin, dust mites, pet dander, and environmental allergens, stress and cortisol, which directly increases skin inflammation, and changes in temperature and humidity, particularly cold dry air in winter.

Identifying your personal triggers takes time and patience. A simple elimination approach, removing one potential trigger at a time and observing the skin's response, is often the most effective way to build a clear picture.


What the skin actually needs

Managing eczema skin starts with one fundamental principle. The skin barrier needs consistent, intensive support.

This means choosing ingredients that replenish the lipids the barrier is missing. Fatty acids, particularly those that closely mirror the skin's own natural composition, help fill the gaps in the barrier and reduce the rate of moisture loss. Ingredients that are free from synthetic fragrances, harsh preservatives, and known irritants reduce the likelihood of triggering a response.

It means cleansing gently and infrequently, using lukewarm rather than hot water, and applying a nourishing product immediately after bathing while the skin is still slightly damp to seal in moisture before it evaporates.

It means being consistent even when the skin looks calm. The barrier needs ongoing support, not just treatment during flares.


A word on natural ingredients and eczema

Not all natural ingredients are suitable for eczema-prone skin. Some essential oils, botanical extracts, and even certain plant-based oils can be irritating for skin that's already compromised and reactive.

The key is simplicity and compatibility. Fewer ingredients, higher quality, and a strong focus on barrier-supporting lipids rather than active ingredients that might further sensitise the skin.

Grass-fed tallow is one of the ingredients we find most compelling for eczema-prone skin precisely because of how closely its fatty acid profile mirrors the skin's own natural lipids. It's deeply nourishing, free from the synthetic additives that commonly trigger reactions, and absorbs in a way that supports the barrier rather than sitting on top of it.

Every skin is different, and what works beautifully for one person may not work for another. But the principle remains the same. Support the barrier, reduce irritants, and give the skin the consistency and gentleness it needs to find its way back to calm.


More than skin deep

What we've come to understand about eczema is that it asks something of us beyond just topical treatment.

It asks us to slow down and pay attention. To notice what the skin responds to and what it recoils from. To build routines that prioritise gentleness over everything else. And to extend the same patience and compassion to our skin that we would to anything else that's struggling.

Eczema skin is not broken. It's sensitive. It's communicative. And with the right support, it can find a level of calm that feels, for many people, genuinely transformative.
